Case Report: mitochondrial insufficiency and cholinergic failure in post-vaccination LC
- Condition
- Long COVID
- At worst
- Severe (mostly bedbound)
- Ill for
- 9 months
- Published
- 2026
Summary
This 80-year-old professor was given Mestinon (pyridostigmine bromide) 90 mg daily for balance problems, which brought minimal benefit over two months, and then a mitochondrial support protocol targeting NAD+ repletion, electron transport chain function and oxidative stress, delivered mixed into fresh-squeezed orange juice. He had severe COVID requiring hospitalization in December 2024, then nine months later, following a fifth vaccine dose, suffered immediate and severe deterioration into complete functional collapse requiring help with basic self-care and forcing medical leave from his university post. The mitochondrial protocol produced dramatic improvement within 48 hours and sustained functional recovery over six weeks, but challenge-rechallenge testing showed his symptoms rapidly recurred whenever he missed a dose, took the components out of sequence, or substituted water for the orange juice. The benefit therefore depended on strict ongoing adherence to the protocol rather than being a lasting, one-time cure.
