Summary
Jennifer followed an anti-inflammatory diet based on Andrew Weil and Patrick Holford's principles, alongside regular massage therapy, acupuncture, deep relaxation and meditation practices, and a custom-designed graded walk-training program, after early treatment with NSAIDs, a physical rehabilitation stay and an intensive antibiotics course that she says damaged her gut microbiome. She was ill with ME/CFS, fibromyalgia, juvenile arthritis and IBS for over 15 years from age 13, becoming mostly housebound during her final two years of school with severe fatigue, whole-body pain, painsomnia and brain fog. She now says she no longer meets the diagnostic criteria for any of her illnesses except asthma and no longer feels ill, working part-time as a psychologist and taking day trips with her children. She defines her own recovery as being able to walk 5km and work part-time without frequent flare-ups, rather than a complete return to her pre-illness life. She maintains ongoing energy pacing, planning skills and short "exercise snacking" bursts of movement to stay well, so some management is still required rather than the illness being fully behind her.
